CAW recently interviewed historian Dr. Dan Wimberly about his biography of important early Cherokee political leader and Baptist minister Jesse Bushyhead. Bushyhead was a detachment leader during the forced Indian removal on the Trail of Tears. In this capacity, he was responsible for the safe conduct of more than 900 emigrants from Tennessee to Indian Territory in eastern Oklahoma. Bushyhead died in 1844 and is buried near the Old Baptist Mission north of Westville, OK.
CAW highly recommends Dr. Wimberly's work as a must-read for anyone who wishes to learn about a consequential political and faith leader among the Cherokees during the period of their exodus and resettlement in Oklahoma. See the discussion with Dr. Wimberly at the "Featured Interviews" page.
The book is "CHEROKEE IN CONTROVERY - The life of Jesse Bushyhead" published my Mercer University Press. You may get it at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
